Financial Concepts Semantics
One-day interactive deep dive into the semantics of the financial industry.
Sessions will be recorded for later access.
This is an interactive walk-through rather than slides. We will look both at the conceptual underpinnings of the concepts in FIBO and the published FIBO standards ontologies. The conceptual side will make reference to earlier work on a Semantics Repository that formed the conceptual basis for the FIBO standard.
The two-day tutorial on Concept Ontology Engineering is a pre-requisite for this tutorial.
Presenter: Mike Bennett
Mike is the director of Hypercube Limited, a company that helps people manage their information assets using formal semantics. Mike is the originator of the Financial Industry Business Ontology (FIBO) from the EDM Council, a formal ontology for financial industry concepts and definitions. Mike provides mentoring and training in the application of formal semantics to business problems and strategy, and is retained as Standards Liaison for the EDM Council and the IOTA Foundation, a novel Blockchain-like ecosystem. He has over 20 years of financial industry experience with investment management software, messaging standards, testing and project management.
Mike was instrumental in developing the Financial Industry Business Ontology (FIBO), which is maintained by the Enterprise Data Management Council and published in standard form by the Object Management Group.
This one-day walk-through draws on both the original conceptual work and the current standard.

Curriculum
What You'll Learn
In this tutorial we we will learn all about the semantics of financial instruments and other industry terms, from their conceptual underpinnings (as kinds of contract, commitment and so on), through to detailed taxonomies of instrument types and their differentiating characteristics.
For each instrument category we will also look at what is in the published FIBO industry standards and how these can be used in different settings.
